Hygienic masks are not surgical masks or FFP2 respirators (they are not personal protective equipment PPE). Hygienic masks are recommended for people without symptoms, and for children.
Our masks are made from two layers of 100% cotton fabric and are washable and reusable (see care instructions).
The inner lining of the mask is made from a 100% cotton technical fabric which has been tested and certified by ITEL for the following properties:
- The BFE or filtration of bacteria and particles larger than 0.4 microns is greater than 94% according to UNE-EN 14683: 2019 + AC: 2019
- Breathable with a differential pressure <60Pa / cm2 according to UNE ENISO 12945-2
- Water repellent (resistant to liquids and barrier of aerosols and droplets in the air) according EN-13795
(please see further details on our certifications page)
The lining fabric is certified to retain its properties for 25 washes. After this, the mask may still be used. It will continue to be at least as effective as a home-made mask.
An additional filter may be inserted between the two layers of fabric if desired, but this is optional.
Please see our size guide here and below. here and below. The measurements refer to the face, not the mask. If in doubt, we recommend choosing the smaller size. Please note there may be a slight variation in masks of the same size because they are handmade individually.<
The two-layer design of our mask allows for an optional filter to be inserted between the two layers of fabric. Our masks have been tested and certified as compliant with UNE0065 without the need for a filter.
Filters are optional and not necessary for the mask to be effective, because the inner lining of the mask itself acts as a filter. See our certifications certifications page for details of the lining fabric properties.
The lining fabric is certified to maintain its filtration and antibacterial properties for 25 washes, after that it will gradually lose them, but remain at least as effective as a homemade mask. As the mask gets older, a filter can be added to increase protection.
The filters are made from meltblown non-woven fabric 55gsm. They come in a rectangular shape and can be cut or folded to fit the mask as needed. If used, the filter should be replaced after each use or if it becomes wet.
The mask should be washed before first use and after each use. Wash the mask by hand with a small drop of normal detergent in hot water, or machine wash at 60°C as a delicate garment. Allow to air dry, preferably in the sun. Do not use a clothes dryer.
Do not use bleach - bleach will affect the colour of your mask.
The washing instructions for the mask carriers are the same as for the masks.
The lining fabric is certified to retain its technical properties (see certifications page) for 25 washes.

Yes, we have. We believe we are all in this together and we know there are people in Barcelona who can’t afford to buy masks.
As well as producing masks to sell, we also make some to give away. So far we have been able to donate hundreds of masks to local organisations who distribute them within their communities, and we will continue to do so. Some of the organisations we have donated to include Caritas and El Casal dels Infants de Raval. You can read more about our charity donations in this blog.
