How to make a super-easy soap with reclaimed oil

Tips for being sustainable at home: Ingredients for making soap with recycled oil

According to studies, two out of every three litres of olive oil from frying end up in the sink, damaging the functioning of wastewater treatment plants, reaching rivers and creating a film on the water, hindering the passage of oxygen and causing serious environmental problems. It is estimated that one litre of used oil can contaminate up to 10,000 litres of water.

And what can we do at home to avoid this? Apart from separating the used oil in cans and taking them to the green points where they are recycled, from EARTHFORALL we recommend that you recycle them as homemade soap.

To make homemade soap you will only need 3 ingredients:

2 litres of water
2 litres of recycled oil
246 grams of caustic soda.
Or, if you only have 1 litre of oil at home, practice your math:

1 litre of oil
1 litre of water
123 grams of caustic soda
In addition, you will need these utensils:

1 heat-resistant plastic or stainless steel container (never aluminum).
1 wooden spoon or mini blender
1 strainer
Mould or moulds
Caustic soda can be dangerous, so we recommend that you wear gloves and goggles when mixing and, if possible, work in a ventilated area.

The steps to follow are as follows:

Pour in a container the necessary water according to the oil you have, if you have 1 liter of oil, pour 1 liter of water.

Then add the soda and stir slowly with a wooden spoon until it is dissolved.

Then the mixture has to cool down, then it is time to add the oil and keep stirring until you get a homogeneous mixture.

At this moment you can add essential oils or herbs to aromatise and increase the properties of the soap such as aloe vera, rosemary, thyme or calendula.

You can put the mixture in separate moulds or in a larger one and cut it in 24 or 48 hours with the measures you want to store them.

For the soap to be perfect, you should let it rest for at least another month, and then it will be ready to use. And what can you use it for? This soap is especially suitable for washing clothes (you can cut it with a grater) or dishes. If you want a soap for the body or hands, it is exactly the same recipe but with virgin olive oil.

After finishing the process, make sure that all the materials are more than clean of soda.
