5 Ways to be More Sustainable at Home
1. Food Waste:
If you have leftovers, don’t throw them away. Save them for your lunch or tea the next day, or even freeze them. However, if they do go off, use them to create compost. In the EU, around 88 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually with associated costs estimated at 143 billion euros. While an estimated 20% of the total food produced is lost or wasted, 33 million people cannot afford a quality meal every second day.
2. Wear sustainable clothing:
The fashion industry is one of the main polluting industries in the world. To lessen the impact this industry has on the planet, you could buy more of your clothes from charity shops and sustainable clothing outlets. Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity's carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams. What's more, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year.
3. Use eco-friendly cleaning products:
Some cleaning products contain chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. By committing to using eco-friendly cleaning products, you can help to prevent these chemicals from having a negative impact on the Earth.
4. Recycle and Reuse:
Make sure you’re recycling by putting your rubbish in the correct bins. Also, try to reuse products and items as many times as possible before binning them to reduce waste. Ultimately this reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change, reduces the amount of waste that will need to be recycled or sent to landfills and incinerators, and allows products to be used to their fullest extent.
Single-use products, particularly plastic ones, tend to end up in landfill and the ocean, causing harm to wildlife and the environment. Prevent this by choosing to use reusable and eco-friendly alternatives instead.
4. Minimize Packaging:
Look for loose fruit and vegetables, and take your own containers to shops and markets. If you are buying packaged food, look at where the product comes from and try to choose the more local option – local products will have a lower carbon footprint than imports even if they have the same packaging. The most recyclable plastics are PET, found in drinks bottles and fruit punnets, and HDPE, in milk bottles and cereal box liners; so if you can’t avoid it, go for these, then reuse or recycle what you can.
1.To help you reduce your food waste, we suggest trying our Vegan food wraps. They come in a practical set of 3 of the most commonly used sizes. They’re eco-friendly, compostable, sustainable, reusable, washable and biodegradable. 100% vegan.
2. You can find many sustainable clothing items made from organic cotton on our online store. For instance, we offer smocks for children.
